Shining a Light on Suicide Awareness: Together, We Can Make a Difference
Every September, communities across the country come together for Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. Here at Oklahoma’s Choice Weekly, we believe awareness starts right at home with our families, our neighbors, and our communities.
Suicide doesn’t just affect individuals it touches families, workplaces, schools, and entire towns. That’s why awareness and action matter.
Breaking the Silence
For too long, conversations about suicide have been hidden in the shadows. But talking about mental health and struggles saves lives. By opening the door to conversation, we show one another that it’s okay to reach out, and it’s okay to ask for help.
OCW Tribute Pages: Honoring Lives, Raising Awareness
This month, our Tribute Pages are available right here on the OCW website and app. Families, friends, and community members can honor someone they’ve lost, celebrate survivors, or share words of encouragement.
By adding a tribute, you not only honor a loved one but also help spread hope and awareness throughout our community.
Supporting the Cause Through Facebook
We’re also raising funds through a Facebook fundraiser benefiting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Every dollar donated helps ensure that anyone in crisis has access to immediate, 24/7 support.
Want to get involved? Visit our OCW Facebook page to donate, share the fundraiser, or spread the word. Together, we can make an impact.

Recognizing the Signs
If you notice someone showing signs of struggle, here are a few ways to step in:
-
Withdrawing from friends or activities
-
Talking about hopelessness, feeling trapped, or being a burden
-
Dramatic mood changes or loss of interest in daily life
-
Expressing thoughts of self-harm
A simple check-in could save a life.

Community Comes First
At Oklahoma’s Choice Weekly, we are more than a publication—we’re your neighbors, your friends, and your community. Together, through conversation, compassion, and action, we can make sure hope shines brighter than despair.
This September and beyond join us in raising awareness, honoring lives, and reminding every person in our community: you matter.
