ICYMI: The Kitchen Sink Article from November 13, 2025 | Holiday Prep

Hello Friends! Fall is in full swing and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Normally we would discuss how to prepare for Thanksgiving, I thought we might shift just a tad. Things are really crazy right now, our friends and neighbors are struggling. It’s hard to get excited about a holiday knowing people are struggling. In Oklahoma we pull together when times are tough, hence the Oklahoma Standard. Look for a list of resources on the Oklahoma’s Choice Weekly website and on the back page of this issue.

This year most of us will have an extra guest or two. If you aren’t sure you want extra people over, I suggest connecting with your local senior center and seeing if there is anyone you could drop a plate off for locally. I suppose you could even post in your town’s Facebook group. I suspect there will be a lot of these posts the closer we get to Thanksgiving.

You can start planning now! Make your Menu now and you can shop sales or take Aldi up on their Thanksgiving for $40/ serves 10, they even have the shopping list you can download. https://corporate.aldi.us/newsroom/news/thanksgiving-press-release You could even have everyone pitch in or do potluck. Now for your baked goods, I recommend looking for local small and micro businesses and place an order if you can afford to. Trust me, they will appreciate it as this mess is hard on small businesses. Once you have your menu, you can get all your baking pans, serving dishes and whatever else you need to be ready. The world is a mess, allow yourself the Grace to change the rules and do what you can do whatever you want/need to make the Holiday work. Eat PIZZA even. There are NO RULES you must follow!

Before Thanksgiving I like to give my kitchen a good deep clean, that way the week of I can have less clutter and this might be a good time to clear out your pantry, so you have room for all the Thanksgiving foods. Small free food pantries are popping up everywhere, check your local Facebook groups to see where you can donate and what is actually needed to help your neighbors in need.

Another thing to start thinking about is Christmas, knowing it is going to be a “Hard Candy Christmas” for a lot of people, start talking to your kids now so they are not surprised or disappointed expecting something big and fancy. Something my family agreed to do is to buy gifts from local crafters. Yes, it is a little more leg work but to quote Marge Simpson “It’ll be good for the economy.” The LOCAL economy at that, just think of how many happy dances you could be responsible for and how just a single sale could make the difference for a small/micro business.

Join me next month when we will talk more about Christmas and hopefully the world will right itself by then. If not, I will still have tips and tricks to stretch that Christmas Magic.
