Cushing Chamber’s 38th Annual Festival in the Park Returns September 26

One of Cushing’s longtime community traditions returns this fall as the Cushing Chamber of Commerce hosts the 38th Annual Festival in the Park on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The festival will take place from 9 AM to 2 PM at Cushing Memorial Park, 500 S. Little, with a full day of entertainment, food, shopping and activities planned for visitors of all ages.

Families can enjoy free rides and attractions, while local students take the stage throughout the day to showcase their talents. Performances will include students from Dance Star Productions as well as CES, CMS and CHS cheer, dance, mascots, choirs and more.

This year’s entertainment also includes Capstone the Magician, with the performance sponsored by the Sac and Fox Nation.

Visitors should also come hungry. Food trucks and nonprofit organizations will be serving everything from Indian tacos, fry bread and mozzarella sticks to kettle corn, Frito pies, homemade ice cream, funnel cakes, corn dogs, egg rolls, barbecue, jambalaya, cotton candy, gourmet cookies and more.

Shopping will be another major part of the festival, with more than 60 vendor booths featuring boutiques, jewelry, leatherwork, metalwork, pottery, arts and crafts and other merchandise.

For those looking for a little competition, online registration is available for the Grapplers Gallop 5K Run, a certified and sanctioned event, as well as the Cushing Lions Club Chili Cookoff. Registration information is available through the QR codes included on the festival flyer.

Visitors can also stop by participating business information booths for opportunities to enter giveaways throughout the event.

From the Midway to Your Kitchen: Homemade Corn Dogs

Last week, we covered something in powdered sugar.

This week, we're putting it on a stick.

The September fair-food celebration continues in the OCW Recipe Collection, and for the September 9 edition of Oklahoma’s Choice Weekly, we're making one of the most recognizable foods on the midway: Homemade Corn Dogs.

There's something about a freshly fried corn dog that just tastes like the fair. A juicy hot dog, a crispy golden cornmeal coating and a stripe of yellow mustard don't need much explanation.

But you don't have to wait for the fair to get one.

We're Making the Batter from Scratch

Yes, you can take shortcuts when making corn dogs at home.

We're not doing that.

Our Homemade Corn Dogs use a simple batter made with yellow cornmeal, flour, a little sugar, baking powder, egg, buttermilk and honey.

The combination creates that slightly sweet cornmeal coating we associate with a traditional fairground corn dog, while buttermilk adds a subtle tang and helps keep the inside of the coating tender beneath its crispy exterior.

And there's no boxed corn muffin mix required.

The Little Trick That Makes a Difference

One of the frustrating parts about making corn dogs at home can be getting the batter to stay where it belongs.

Hot dogs have a smooth surface, and moisture makes it even more difficult for a thick batter to adhere.

That's why our recipe includes one seemingly insignificant step that you shouldn't skip.

Dry the hot dogs thoroughly and give them a light coating of flour before dipping.

The flour gives the cornmeal batter something to grab onto and helps create a more even coating.

We also recommend pouring the finished batter into a tall glass or similarly narrow container. Instead of trying to roll a hot dog around in a mixing bowl, you can simply lower the skewered hot dog directly into the batter.

Sometimes the little things make cooking a whole lot easier.

Keep an Eye on That Oil

Just like our Homemade Funnel Cakes, corn dogs require hot frying oil.

For this recipe, we're aiming for approximately 350°F.

Maintaining the proper oil temperature helps the coating cook evenly and become golden and crisp without absorbing excessive oil.

The September 9 recipe page also includes our Kitchen Safety reminder: never leave hot oil unattended, keep children and pets away from the cooking area, and never use water on a cooking-oil fire.

Fair food is supposed to be memorable.

Preferably not because the fire department showed up.

Make Them Your Own

The classic corn dog doesn't need much more than mustard, but home cooking gives us permission to play around.

A pinch of cayenne or smoked paprika can add some heat to the batter. A little finely shredded cheddar can turn it cheesy. Honey mustard, barbecue sauce or spicy ranch can replace the traditional mustard and ketchup.

You can also cut the hot dogs into smaller pieces and make mini corn dogs, which are perfect for parties, game days or feeding a crowd.

Homemade Corn Dogs are the second stop in our September fair-food celebration.

We started September 2 with Homemade Funnel Cakes, and now we've crossed over to the savory side of the midway.

But we're not finished.

Huge John Leigh Estate Auction Coming to Claremore September 17

More than 50 years of collecting will come together for a huge estate auction Thursday, September 17, 2026, in Claremore, Oklahoma.

Chupps Auction & Real Estate will conduct the auction for the estate of John Leigh, with Jeannie Leigh/Bump listed as owner. Leigh was a member of several tractor clubs and enjoyed attending tractor pulls and steam engine shows. He also purchased the inventory of two tractor dealerships, creating an extensive collection that includes tons of new old stock vintage tractor parts and numerous rare finds.

A Large and Varied Collection

The auction will include vintage tractors, combines, farm implements, trailers, pipe, scrap metal and hit-and-miss motors. Buyers will also find workbenches, shop tools, welders, supplies, antiques, vintage household furniture, collectibles and much more.

Bring the Fair Home with Homemade Funnel Cakes

There are a lot of reasons to love fair season.

The exhibits. The livestock. The rides. The games. The competition. The people.

But come on.

We all know the food is part of the deal.

September marks the beginning of fair-food season in the OCW Recipe Collection, and we're starting with one of the most recognizable treats on any midway: Homemade Funnel Cakes.

Featured in the September 3 edition of Oklahoma’s Choice Weekly, this week's recipe shows you how to make the crispy, golden, powdered-sugar-covered classic without ever leaving home.

That Unmistakable Fair Favorite

There are certain foods we rarely think about until fair season rolls around.

Then suddenly, the smell of something frying hits you from halfway across the fairgrounds and whatever sensible eating decisions you made that morning are officially over.

Funnel cake has that kind of power.

Made by drizzling batter into hot oil in overlapping circles and zigzags, funnel cakes develop their distinctive tangled shape as they fry. The result is crisp around the edges, tender inside and practically designed to catch ridiculous amounts of powdered sugar.

Traditionally, that's really all they need.

But since we're making them at home, there's no reason we can't have a little fun.

Fresh strawberries and whipped cream can turn a funnel cake into a full-blown dessert. Chocolate sauce, caramel, cinnamon sugar or a scoop of vanilla ice cream can take things even further.

Or you can stick with a mountain of powdered sugar.

There are no wrong answers here.

The Secret Is in the Oil

Making funnel cakes isn't particularly complicated, but oil temperature matters.

For our recipe, the oil is heated to approximately 375°F. A cooking thermometer takes the guesswork out of maintaining the proper temperature while frying.

Oil that's too cool can leave fried foods greasy, while excessively hot oil can brown the outside too quickly.

And because we're dealing with hot oil, the September 3 recipe also includes a Kitchen Safety section.

Use a deep, heavy pan with plenty of room above the oil, never leave hot oil unattended and keep children and pets away from the cooking area.

Most importantly, never use water on a cooking-oil fire.

It's not the glamorous part of making fair food, but it's an important one.

September brings a busy auction schedule for Lippard Real Estate & Auction, with upcoming sales featuring everything from Oklahoma and Kansas farmland to residential real estate, equipment, vehicles, collectibles and household items.

Suicide Prevention Month: Pay Attention to Each Other

September is Suicide Prevention Month.

There are statistics to share, warning signs to learn and resources that everyone should know. But there is also something each of us can do that doesn't require special training or a particular title.

We can pay attention to each other.

Life gets busy. Between work, family, responsibilities and everything competing for our attention, it's easy to pass people every day without really knowing how they're doing.

Sometimes checking in matters more than we realize.

Make the phone call you've been meaning to make. Send the text. Invite someone to lunch. Sit down and listen without feeling like you have to have all the answers. Ask someone how they're doing and give them enough time to actually answer.

And don't assume someone is okay simply because they appear strong.

A Few Words Can Matter

Kindness doesn't always require a grand gesture. Sometimes it's simply making sure another person knows:

I see you.
I'm glad you're here.
You matter to me.

We may never know how much those words mean to someone at exactly the moment they need to hear them.

Suicide prevention is bigger than one month, one campaign or one conversation. It's about creating communities where people know they are valued, where asking for help is met with compassion and where we make an effort to notice one another.

You don't have to wait until a situation reaches a crisis point to reach out. The 988 Lifeline is also available for people experiencing emotional distress or simply needing someone to talk to.

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to learn more about thyroid cancer, recognize possible signs and encourage conversations about changes that may need medical attention.

The thyroid is a small gland located at the base of the neck. Although small, it produces hormones involved in regulating many functions throughout the body.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 45,240 people in the United States will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2026, and approximately 2,320 people will die from the disease. Thyroid cancer is diagnosed nearly three times more often in women than in men.

Know the Signs

A lump or swelling in the neck is one possible sign of thyroid cancer. Other possible signs can include:

• Changes in the voice, including persistent hoarseness

• Difficulty swallowing

• Difficulty breathing

• Pain in the front of the neck or throat that does not go away

Having one or more of these symptoms does not mean someone has thyroid cancer. Thyroid nodules are common and most are not cancerous. However, changes or symptoms that are concerning should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Know Your Neck

Awareness doesn't have to be complicated. Become familiar with what is normal for you and pay attention when something changes.
