September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to learn more about thyroid cancer, recognize possible signs and encourage conversations about changes that may need medical attention.

The thyroid is a small gland located at the base of the neck. Although small, it produces hormones involved in regulating many functions throughout the body.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 45,240 people in the United States will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2026, and approximately 2,320 people will die from the disease. Thyroid cancer is diagnosed nearly three times more often in women than in men.

Know the Signs

A lump or swelling in the neck is one possible sign of thyroid cancer. Other possible signs can include:

• Changes in the voice, including persistent hoarseness

• Difficulty swallowing

• Difficulty breathing

• Pain in the front of the neck or throat that does not go away

Having one or more of these symptoms does not mean someone has thyroid cancer. Thyroid nodules are common and most are not cancerous. However, changes or symptoms that are concerning should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Know Your Neck

Awareness doesn't have to be complicated. Become familiar with what is normal for you and pay attention when something changes.
