Walk down the cereal aisle at any grocery store and you’ll quickly realize just how much competition exists for your attention.  Bright colors. Bold lettering. Special offers. New flavors. Limited editions.  Every box is trying to convince you to choose it over the dozens of others sitting on the shelf.

Marketing often feels exactly the same way.

Open Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or X, and you’ll find yourself scrolling past business after business promoting sales, announcing new products, advertising events, and asking customers to stop by. There is certainly nothing wrong with any of those things. After all, businesses have to let people know what they offer.

The challenge is that everyone is doing it.  When every business begins to sound the same, people naturally begin to tune it out.

That doesn’t mean your business has to spend more money or advertise more often. In many cases, it simply means finding a way to make people pause long enough to notice you.

Think about the businesses you remember most.  It probably isn’t because they had the biggest advertisement or the loudest commercial. Chances are they made you laugh, told a memorable story, solved a problem you were facing, or simply made you feel like they understood what mattered to you.

That’s what good marketing has always been about.  People may forget your prices. They may forget your hours. They may even forget the special you were running last month. What they tend to remember is how your business made them feel. That feeling becomes part of your reputation.

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is believing they have to look and sound exactly like everyone else in their industry. In reality, the businesses that leave a lasting impression are often the ones willing to let their own personality shine through.

Your customers aren’t just buying products or services.  They’re buying confidence. They’re buying trust. They’re buying experience. They’re buying relationships. Those are things no competitor can duplicate.

Every business has its own story to tell. Maybe it’s the family that started the company decades ago. Maybe it’s the pride taken in serving customers. Maybe it’s simply the commitment to doing quality work every single day.  Those are the things people connect with.

Advertising will always be important, but today’s customers are looking for more than information. They’re looking for businesses that feel authentic. Businesses they can trust. Businesses they remember long after they’ve scrolled past the next advertisement.

As you think about your next advertisement, website update, or social media post, don’t ask yourself how you can be louder than everyone else.

Ask yourself something much simpler.  “What makes my business different?”  The answer to that question is often the beginning of your strongest marketing.
